Setting SMART Goals

Making a New Year’s Resolution or just looking to accomplish a goal? S.M.A.R.T. goals are more likely to be achieved than a goal that is not well-thought out.


What is a S.M.A.R.T. goal? It is a goal that is:

-Specific

-Measurable

-Achievable (by Action)

-Realistic

-Timely


First, the goal must be specific and measurable. For example, “I want to lose weight” vs. “I want to lose 10 pounds in two months”. Or, “I want to eat healthier” vs. “I will eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day” for six months.


Next, a goal needs to be achievable and attainable by action and realistic.If our goal is not within our reach and we don’t have the resources to accomplish it, we set ourselves up for failure. For example, “I want to lose 15 pounds this week” is not a realistic goal. Neither is, “I haven’t left my couch very often, but I’m going to complete a marathon next weekend.”


Finally, your goal needs to have a timeline. In the earlier examples of “I want to lose weight” is more vague than “I want to lose 10 pounds in two months”. The first example doesn’t require any pressing need or strong motivation on the part of the goal setter.
